Day 11 - (Suggested trip to Livigno)

So we're trying to get to Livigno, apparently the Gavia Pass is open (see later in the blog for update). So big day out planned. Found this stunning place at the top of the inaugural windy, bendy, twisty switchback of the tour. The roads were really fast and there were literally hundreds of bikes out flying along - much faster than us, but we weren't being shabby ourselves!
Got to the base of Gavia and oh no, it's closed - no way through unfortunately, so had a quick beer and re-routed. We intend to make it to Livigno so we've added a further 3 hours to our trip and headed up The Bernina Pass towards St Moritz and turn left half way up on the pass to Livigno - guess what , this pass was also closed when we got there!!!!
So decided to head into St Moritz and turn right back to Bolzano. Yet another brilliant road - The Passo del Bernina to the famous ski report known as the rich mans' playground and exclusive billionaires clubs. Yes there were some amazing hotels, but didn't look like we expected and a bit rough around the edges! Maybe it's better covered in snow.
PC had an inkling that there would be tuna off the road from St Moritz to Blozano to Livigno, and sure enough there was a road open, so we headed to Livigno and eventually after 2 other attempts, made it to the town - it was VERY busy! had a pizza, quick beer and found that we could re-route from Livigno, going over the Stelvio Pass, so added another hour on to the journey!

The road up from Bormio was truly amazing, switchbacks agin, but this time really tight, 1st gear manoeuvres required.
Stopping at the top of Stelvio with thousands of bikers and car enthusiasts is always a treat, but riding down northwards is always hairy!!We weren't planning Stelvio this year, and in fact hadn't' really realised that it was so close to where were were planning to go! So it was a real bonus, although the ride down is always, again, hairy!! Decided to bash it home now, although did find a lovely roadside cafe/restaurant and had two large pizza's between us.We have ridden 9hr 9 mins, been out for just over 12 hours, 274 miles later on the most amazing roads. This was up there as one of the best ring days we've ever had!
